Should this issue be pushed back to a later release? I think Python 3 is still relatively rare in the wild, and incompatibilities with Python 2 means that there'll be two versions of Python tools to maintain.

I agree for two reasons. I don't think anyone feels like doing this now and I haven't actually seen python 3 installed anywhere.
I'll bump the ticket.
